Religion began with desire to reach –

To touch God, and know that He’s ours,

Creating its’ symbols to fill up the breach,

Between God and our search for his powers.

I really respect a desire for truth,

That desire’s my own everyday,

But what they’re neglecting to tell all our youth,

Is we all have our own ways to pray!

Some people seek out religion with fear,

Believing because they fear not to.

But to me God is someone I want to be near,

And not because they say I’ve got to!

Religions so often confine a man,

Try to tell him what his life should be,

But God didn’t lay out an itemized plan,

He wanted us all to be free.

Free to decide between good and bad,

Free to accept, or deny Him,

Free to be happy or make our lives sad,

And all that He’s asked is we try Him.

For who can deny what’s inside his own heart?

Which of us worship our sadness?

It’s nothing to do with who’s stupid or smart,

It’s mankind’s desire for gladness.

I don’t mean to say that religion is wrong,

It represents only confusion,

People feel churches will make their faith strong,

And erase all their thoughts of illusion.

They open their gates to those who agree,

That their explanations are best.

They spend their time trying to make people see –

That they have more truth than the rest.

But their symbols express only goodness and love,

And for that, surely God smiles at them.

But they should make it clear, God is not just above –

He’s the love from which all of us stem!
